Fo Friday - Giant Blanket

I have not taken part in FO Friday for nearly a year!! Though it was through lack of blogging rather than lack of finished objects J

This week I want to share an action shot of my gorgeous nine stranded blanket that I made on 25mm cables and Acrylic yarn. I used roughly around 20 balls of yarn ranging from super chunky to lace weight.

I decided to knit this blanket because I had so much acrylic yarn in tubs taking up space in my workshop, you know its all balls people "gift" you because you knit, or that you have brought in Charity shops or collected when you first started out.

Giant Snugle Blanket is now on Raverly

What I did was cast on 60 stitches

Row 1 K2, Knit till end of row
Row 2 K2, Purl until last two stitches, K2

I achieved the orange colour strips simply by knitting one 100g ball of eyelash yarn in the orange colour near the start and using another 100g ball near the end. otherwise I used blue eyelash yarn throughout. ...So no weaving in ends!! YAY!!

You knit each ball of yarn until you run out, so you need to keep an eye on your yarn, so you can knot on the same or a different colour, weight yarn etc. as they will run out at different rates depending on what yarn your using.

You could group yarns by colour ie. nine strands of red, then 9 strands of yellow etc for a stripped look, or you can do what i did and just mix them all together as you knit which is a great stash buster!

In mine I used Marble chunky, Style Craft DK, Acrylic Mohair lace weight,   loads of Vintage balls of pink tweed 4ply,  Novelty eyelash yarn.

By having a garter stitch edge it has stop my blanket from curling at the sides thus enabling it to lay completely flat!

Tips
  • 1)      Use a Circular cable needle instead of straight needles when knitting big, the cables will allow your blanket to sit in your lap, and takes the weight off your wrists! You can get these giant cables from Ingrid Wagner
  • 2)      Use bowls, boxes etc as caddies to keep your yarn tidy and stop it from getting into a tangled mess!
  • 3)      When you knit the strands of yarn IT WILL TWIST UP this is what it is supposed to do! Just knit the twist.
  • 4)      I added eyelash yarn and all the other novelty yarn I have been gifted over the years, they give the blanket a real fluffy soft look!

My son absolute loves this blanket and takes it to bed every night, at the moment he is home using it to snuggle up while he gets over another Asthma attack. I love that I can comfort him and keep him warm and safe with something that was made with my own to hands!

I have a feeling this blanket will be well used for a good few years and because of this and the fact that this blanket is a great stash busting project, I will be  making lots more of them, to keep on hand for in the car and those winter nights snuggling on the sofa.

I also posted another FO and free pattern yesterday which are My Short hand Snugs, enjoy :)

Have a wonderful Weekend everyone xx

  4. I've been eying my own giant needles since you cast on for this blanket. I need to make one, too! I have a giant stash, and at least half of it is cheap acrylic I'll never use for anything else.

  6. It's lovely and snuggly and warm. But I don't think I can find needles large enough and, even if I could, I don't know that I'd physically be able to knit that :) But you just rock on with your bad self!
